Justin Bieber eats burritos weird
Fake news is common, and happens a lot more than you may think. It is often found or most talked about in the news because when news is fake it tends to be taken more seriously because "fake news" educates others with incorrect information. The purpose of fake news is to mislead people into thinking that specified "news" that is going on in current times is real when it is not. Often times fake news is created to stir drama or a reaction from a specific party such as a celebrity. Fake news is also a method of "click bait". Click bait is when a company, website or individual creates content with eye grabbing pictures or titles that make users click to be further educated. These "clicks" are traps so that the users are baited into clicking on said website to then view advertisements which ultimately bring in ad revenue for the website.
Recently, a picture of Justin Bieber surfaced. The image was of the celebrity eating on a park bench. What was found to be interesting, and what made global news was how he was eating a burrito. Horizontally instead of vertically. This is an example of "fake news". The image was faked, by a known group of friends called "Yes Theory" that own a youtube channel. The entire process of the image was documented by them. They hired a look-alike of Justin, dressed him like Justin would, dyed his hair and took the photo themselves. They then advertised the video using free services like Reddit which gained the image popularity. After 24 hours of posting the image, news outlets like TMZ, GlobalNews and DailyMail had contacted them about the picture. Within 72 hours of creating the faked picture, they had reliable news outlets Airing the image to the world. This is an example of fake news that was ultimately harmless.
Weeks later another image surfaced of Travis Scott apparently "cheating" on Kylie Jenner with a faceless brunette. This image is also faked, and was documented by the youtuber "ChristianAdamG". Except this time, he was the look-alike who changed his hairstyle to match Travis'. He went through the same process of gaining his image popularity and had the same outcome. Travis Scott eventually responded angered that he was being portrayed as a "cheater" considering he had just had a baby with Kylie. This example of Fake news is harmful.
In my opinion, fake news is hard to recognize because software like photoshop and "Deep Fake" can alter images so well that the human eye can't identify faults or imperfections. The news outlets can't be blamed either considering they already take precautions behind their sources. I think the only way to prevent fake news is to increase the background check of sources, considering both of these youtube stars did not really need to be reliable since it was their first time dealing with the involved news outlets.

I agree with you, Braeden. Fake news is a serious issue in society, and can alter people's views on very important topics, that should not be tampered with, for example, elections.
